Former industry insider | Now observing from the outside
Simon Woodward is a British travel writer and former Product Director at Trailfinders, one of the UK’s largest and most respected independent tour operators. He spent 28 years in the travel industry in senior roles across product development, destination strategy and contracting — working across five continents, shaping holidays for hundreds of thousands of travellers, and occasionally remembering to send a postcard.
He started writing Postcards With Perspective because, after nearly three decades of thinking about how travel is packaged and sold, he wanted to slow down and look more carefully at what actually makes a place worth visiting. The hotels that explain their neighbourhood. The streets that reveal a city’s character. The moments that no itinerary ever quite captures.
He has travelled extensively for business and leisure, always with an eye on how culture and history combine to create a sense of place. He credits a post-university hitchhiking epic from Niagara Falls to New Orleans as the catalyst for his love of experiential travel and travel stories.
He has strong opinions about hotel welcome drinks, a deep suspicion of bucket lists, and a postcard from Mexico that has been in transit for 22 years and counting.
He is based in south London, UK, and also writes award-winning genre fiction under the name Simon Paul Woodward at www.simonpaulwoodward.com.
